<p>On February 26, 2012, Temple University’s Film and Media Arts Department will host the Derek Freese Film Festival, now in its sixteenth year, which offers youth filmmakers, ages 12 to 18, an opportunity to screen their work in front of their peers and other film professionals. The festival was created to honor the memory of Derek Freese, a graduate of the Temple film program, who passed away two days after arriving in Hollywood, California. His family decided to keep his love of film alive by founding the Derek Freese Foundation in 1997.</p>
<p>This year’s festival will be focused on local filmmakers in the Mid-Atlantic region. The categories for this year’s festival entries include fiction, documentary, experimental, animation, cinematography, editing, female filmmaker, and audience’s choice. Entry to the Derek Freese Festival is free, and we accept online and DVD submissions. All entries must be accompanies by an online entry form, please check our website for more information.</p>
<p>There will be a cash prize of $100 for each category. Submission will begin in December 2011 and the deadline will be Friday, January 30<sup>th</sup>, 2012. All finalists will be notified before the festival and awards ceremony on February 26<sup>th </sup>2012. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal;">The 15th annual Derek Freese High School Film Festival, organized by <strong>Temple University Film &amp; Media Department</strong>, wrapped on a cold day of December 11; for the first time, the festival was held in winter! More than 60 high school student films from all over the country were submitted to the festival, and eight distinguished judges, whose biographies can be found <a href="http://freesefilmfestival.org/judge-bios/">here</a>, helped select the finalists. Cash prizes were provided by <strong>Derek Freese Film Foundation</strong> and craft awards provided by <strong>Sony</strong>, <strong>Cisco Systems Flip</strong>, <strong>GlideCam</strong>, and <strong>Focal Press</strong> were presented during the festival.</span></h2>
<p>The Winners of the Derek Freese High School Film Festival are:</p>
<p><strong>Best Fiction</strong></p>
<p><strong>First Place:</strong> <em>Buy, Sell, Trade</em> by Blair Scott, Emily Deering, and Amelia Elizalde.</p>
<p><strong>Second Place:</strong> <em>The Real World</em> by Tony Meyer, Ryan Zemke, and Matt Law-Phipps.</p>
<p><strong>Third Place:</strong> <em>Perspectives of the End</em> by Matthew Donato.</p>
<p><strong>Best Documentary</strong></p>
<p><strong>First Place:</strong> <em>Bar Ink</em> by Spencer Miller, Georgia Peck, Robyn Cochrane, and Justin Smith-Mercado.</p>
<p><strong>Second Place:</strong> <em>Henry</em> by Amelia Elizalde, Levi Friedman, Sheridan Koehler, and Sean Hendricks.</p>
<p><strong>Third Place:</strong> <em>Seattle Street Performers</em> by Tony Meyer, Matthew Law-Phipps, and James Vitz-Wong.</p>
